Integrating habitat models for threatened species with landownership information to inform coastal resiliency and conservation planning

چکیده
Summary Sea-level rise threatens both human communities and vulnerable species within coastal areas. Joint spatial planning can allow conservation social resiliency goals to work in synergy. We present a case study integrating distribution information of threatened saltmarsh bird, the eastern black rail ( Laterallus jamaicensis ), with facilitate such joint planning. constructed model for an urbanizing region (New Jersey, USA) integrated this publicly available parcel protected area data summarize ownership patterns. estimated that c . 0.3–2.8% 260–2200 ha) is occupied by rail, most which owned (79%). Privately was spread across nearly 5000 individual parcels, 10% contained areas highest likelihood presence according our (top quartile predicted occupancy probabilities). Compared all privately saltmarsh, parcels probable habitat were larger (median: 5 versus 2 ha), more marsh (87% 59%) less economically valuable (US$11 200 US$36 100). Our approach distributions landownership helps clarify trade-offs synergies

Sensitivity analyses of spatial population viability analysis models for species at risk and habitat conservation planning.
Population viability analysis (PVA) is an effective framework for modeling species- and habitat-recovery efforts, but uncertainty in parameter estimates and model structure can lead to unreliable predictions. Integrating complex and often uncertain information into spatial PVA models requires that comprehensive sensitivity analyses be applied to explore the influence of spatial and nonspatial p...
متن کاملInterview-based sighting histories can inform regional conservation prioritization for highly threatened cryptic species
The use of robust ecological data to make evidence-based management decisions is frequently prevented by limited data quantity or quality, and local ecological knowledge (LEK) is increasingly seen as an important source of information for conservation. However, there has been little assessment of LEK's usefulness for informing prioritization and management of landscapes for threatened species, ...
متن کاملRapid conservation assessment for endangered species using habitat connectivity models
To avoid extinction of rare species in regions of active environmental change, strategic approaches are needed to manage remaining habitat. When observations of dispersal or metapopulation information are not available, habitat connectivity simulations may offer a valuable alternative source of information to assess threats and evaluate conservation options. For the Critically Endangered San Ma...
متن کاملIntegrating paleobiology, archeology, and history to inform biological conservation.
The search for novel approaches to establishing ecological baselines (reference conditions) is constrained by the fact that most ecological studies span the past few decades, at most, and investigate ecosystems that have been substantially altered by human activities for decades, centuries, or more. Paleobiology, archeology, and history provide historical ecological context for biological conse...
متن کاملIntegrating Scientific Methods with Habitat Conservation Planning: Reserve Design for Northern Spotted Owls.
To meet the requirements of Congressional legislation mandating the production of a "scientifically credible" conservation strategy for the threatened Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina), the Interagency Spotted Owl Scientific Committee employed scientific methods to design a habitat reserve system. Information on the current and historical distributions of the owl and its habitat...
